What types of licenses are available?
Firstly, there are no technical differences between the editions.
Standard Edition
Standard Edition licenses are our most affordable license and it enables you to run the editor with a limited number of named users on a single domain name. It is licensed in packs of 10 users. If you have more than 100 users it is typically more economical to license the Professional Edition.
From a technical standpoint, our license keys are calculated based upon the domain name of the site hosting the editor. A seat activation process also occurs when a user accesses EditLive! for the first time on a machine. The license allows you to allocate up to three (3) seat activations per named user before you need to contact us.
Professional Edition
Professional Edition licenses enable unlimited users and are licensed by the number of processors of the server(s) hosting the application. A Professional Edition license enables you to host the editor on up to 20 domains.
From a technical standpoint, our license keys are calculated based upon the domain name of the site hosting the editor.
Per Developer
In situations where you are integrating one of our JavaBean editions into a rich client application, it may not make sense to license the product by server (there may not be a server!). For this reason, we license JavaBean editions by the number of developers on your project team. Licenses are runtime royalty-free when used within applications used internally within the licensee's organization.
This doesn't cover deploying EditLive! in a commercial software application, an OEM or reseller license is required for this.
OEM and Reseller
For redistribution of EditLive! Within your own software application please contact us for OEM and VAR licensing terms.
Can I get a temporary license to evaluate your product?
There are three ways that you can evaluate an EditLive! product in your own environment:
-
The licensing of any newly installed copy of EditLive! is open for 30 days after its first
install. This applies to the first use of EditLive! on any website including the
demonstrations on our website. Should you wish to continue EditLive! after the first
30 days you can choose one of the methods below.
-
You can install EditLive! for Java on your desktop and use the LOCALHOST license in the
EditLive! for Java SDK. This is an unlimited-user non-timed license but it will only
operate on the desktop computer actually hosting the application and accessing it
through a http://localhost... URL.
-
You can contact Ephox Client Support for a timed trial license. This type of license will
allow an unlimited number of users to use the editor for the period specified in the
license and provided they are accessing the site via the nominated domain address in the
license. We would normally issue a timed license for a 30-day period. When requesting a
timed license you should provide the following information:
- EditLive! product
- Organization name
- Name and contact details of the technical contact
- Domain to be licensed
Why do I need to renew my Annual Upgrade Subscription?
Keeping your Annual Upgrade Subscription (also known as 'AUS') current is important as it entitles you to:
- Major and minor upgrades of for the products.
- Access to our technical support
- Access to download documentation and forums.
Letting your upgrade subscription lapse may require you to pay the full upgrade price for your product in the future and to pay for technical support incidents.
The annual upgrade subscription is 30% of the current price of the product.
I get an error message that I have used all of my seat licenses?
You should only receive this message if you have purchased a limited-seat "Standard Edition" license.
We allow you to activate your license three times to cover desktop reinstalls and replacements and a single named user accessing the editor in multiple locations (e.g. home, laptop, work). Therefore, a 10 seat-license would allow 30 activations before causing an error. Note, this doesn't change that you are only licensed for the specified number of named users as you have purchased.
Should you get this message then you have the following choices:
- Purchase additional licenses - this will apply if you have more users the you originally purchased.
- Request resetting of licenses - this may occur when there has been wholesale replacement of machines. This service is only available to clients with current Annual Upgrade Subscription.
I am unable to activate a license on a client machine?
There can be a number of reasons why this may occur and some are quite product specific. We are unable to identify the reason without your provision of a log from your PC. Please obtain a log by following the procedure on our replication information page and submitting that log through our normal support ticket system.
If your end users do not have access to the Internet, you can purchase a Professional Edition or contact us for a special arrangement.
See also the FAQ for your specific product.
My license does not activate for my domain?
Licensing is domain specific and a license can not be used on another domain.
However, licenses will normally allow activation on any sub-domain of a domain as well as for the prefix 'www'. Thus, a license for 'mydomain.com' will also work for 'www.mydomain.com' or 'mysub-domain.mydomain.com'.
It is possible to verify the domain licensing by examining the log file for your product. Log files list license registration errors. See the replication information page for details of how to generate a log file for your product.
Can I license an IP address?
Yes. It must however be the full IP address as our licensing does not allow part IP addresses.
Please specify the IP address when ordering your EditLive! product.
Can I obtain a license that allows for multiple sub-domains?
Yes. We have special license keys that allow multiple sub-domains to be run on the one domain. For example: xxx.ephox.com, yyy.ephox.com and www.ephox.com could all be run with a sub-domain license for ephox.com.
Please request this type of license when purchasing your EditLive! product.
Can I license a server address?
Is this the domain that users see when accessing the web application? If so, yes - there is no requirement for a top level domain such as ".com" or ".co.uk". Please provide the server name when ordering your EditLive! product.
Is there a way to see if a single user has activated EditLive?
This is possible with limited-seat licenses only. You can opt in to receive notification emails when a user activates a new seat license. If you would like that feature added to your profile please contact Ephox client support.
This facility does not apply to unlimited user 'Professional' licenses.
Can I check my licensing information?
Yes. You can create a log of the activation of your EditLive! product. See the replication instructions in our support request page for the procedure to create a log for your product. Viewing the log will show the domain details that have been check at activation.
I have replaced my computer and wish to transfer the license?
This is not an issue with unlimited 'Professional' licenses but may be an issue with limited-seat 'Standard' licenses.
We don't currently provide a way for you to 'remove' a license from a machine.
Having said this, for limited-seat licenses we allow the license for a user to be activated three (3) times and after you upgrade to a new major version and obtain a new license key, the activation allowance is reset to 1. This allowance tends to cover most people's requirement during the life of that version of EditLive!, but should you have any issues please let us know.
If you receive an error message that all seats have been activated this means that three times the number of seats that you have purchased have now been activated.
I have upgraded my software and the licensing no longer works?
It is necessary to change the keys in the onload statement for your product when the version is upgraded. You will need to submit a technical support case to obtain the upgrade key.
