In a "Styles Only Mode", end users are forced to apply and remove cascading style sheet rules in order to achieve their desired document formatting and layout. These stylesheet rules can be stored in a central stylesheet and if they are updated, their is no need for content to be updated, they automatically inherit the new styles.

Style sheet rules can also be used to specify the default formatting and layout of almost all elements in the editor, from tables to headings and lists.

EditLive! for Windows also supports the concept of "editable regions" which allow developers to specify various parts of a document that are read-only and cannot be altered by standard authors.
