EditLive! Error Logging Facility

Ephox, July 2002

Introduction

Ephox EditLive! 2.1 Service Pack 2 includes a routine to produce a log of the following processes:

  • The EditLive! registration process.
  • EditLive! connecting to an FTP server.

If you are experiencing problems performing these processes on an end-user's machine, this error logging facility may help our Ephox Technical Support team to resolve your issue faster.

Minimum Requirements

The minimum version of EditLive! that this error logging facility is included in is EditLive! 2.1 Service Pack 2.

Accessing the EditLive! Error Logging Facility

The following steps need to be carried out to enable EditLive! to produce the log:

  1. Create an editlivelog.txt file on the end-user machine.
  2. Install EditLive! 2.1 Service Pack 2 or greater on the end-user machine.
  3. Perform the EditLive! process on the end-user machine.
  4. Send the Ephox Support Team the relevant information.

Step 1: Create an 'editlivelog.txt' File

A text file must be created on the end-user's machine in order for EditLive! to create the log during the registration and FTP connection processes.

On the end-user's machine:

  1. Ensure that EditLive! 2.1 Service Pack 2 or greater is installed.
  2. Open Notepad.
  3. From the File menu choose the Save option.
  4. In the Save As.. dialog box browse to the folder Program Files/Common Files/Ephox.
  5. Save the file as editlivelog.txt.
  6. Close Notepad.

Once this file has been created, when EditLive! is run it will write certain process tracking messages to this text file.

Step 2: Install EditLive! 2.1 Service Pack 2 or Greater

In order for EditLive! to write to the error logging file, EditLive! 2.1 Service Pack 2 or greater must be installed on the end-user machine.  To get the latest version of EditLive! from our Web site please visit our Online Demos to have the EditLive! software automatically installed, or download the latest EditLive! SDK.

Step 3: Perform the EditLive! Process on the End-user Machine

Once step 1 and 3 above have been completed, please run EditLive! on the end-user machine and perform the registration or FTP process which is currently causing the issue.  This will write the relevant error log messages to the editlivelog.txt file on the end-user machine.

Step 4: Send the Ephox Technical Support Team the Relevant Information

When you have performed steps 1 to 3 above, please send the following information through to the Ephox Support Team so that they may help you resolve the issue:

  • The editlivelog.txt file.
  • A brief description of the issue that is occurring and any error messages being encountered.
  • Your EditLive! registration details (if applicable).
  • The end-user machine system configuration including operating system, Web browser and version.

Future Error Logging Facility Additions

Ephox will be extending this error logging facility in the future to help ease the process of resolving client technical issues.  If you have any suggestions for areas where you feel this error logging facility could be helpful please email them to the Ephox Support Team.
